Na história do Mercado Municipal, um dos mais antigos do Algarve, 22 de Março de 1879 consta como data da primeira diligência para configuração de um espaço salubre para venda de produtos alimentares em simultâneo, particularmente peixe, carne e hortaliças oriundos das redondezas. Este viria a ser construído entre 1894 e 1895 e regulamentado ao nível das condições de venda, horário e preçários, no ano seguinte. Em Lagoa, é seguramente a construção mais representativa da arquitetura do ferro, típica dos finais do séc. XIX, e um dos mais emblemáticos edifícios. Na fachada, dividida por três pilastras, destaca-se uma sineta utilizada para anunciar a chegada de peixe fresco, cujo toque era por todos reconhecido e ainda hoje lembrado. No interior foram tendo lugar as necessárias obras de conservação e melhoramento até ser pensada a deslocalização para a parte nova da cidade. Contudo, a autarquia, respeitando a história e a vontade da população, manteve o mercado na sua primitiva casa. É casa da tradição e um verdadeiro centro de convívio para o povo lagoense.

In the history of the Municipal Market, one of the oldest in the Algarve, March 22nd, 1879, was the day of the first diligence to the configuration of a space to sell food products, namely fish, meat, and vegetables from the neighbourhood. It was built between 1894 and 1895 and regulated according to the sales, timetable, and price conditions in the following year. In Lagoa, this is the most representative construction of the iron architecture, typical of the late 19th century and one of the most emblematic buildings. In the facade, there is a bell used to announce the arrival of fresh fish, whose sound was known by everybody and it is still remembered today. In the interior, there were some renovation work until the decision of relocating it to the new part of the town. However, the autarchy decided to keep the market in its first home, thus respecting the history and the people’s wish. It is a place of tradition and a leisure centre for the people of Lagoa.
