Lagoa was once known as the “Algarve’s vat”, due to the abundance of grapes. The Winery Cooperative of Lagoa was an initiative of the Farming Association with the support of the National Wine Board. Formed by association of local farmers in 1944, and officially declared on 20th December 1951, it was the first winery in the country where the legal procedures that were the starting point for many other wineries took place. Although it was of vital importance to the municipality, it was almost forgotten. In 2008, with the aim to boost Algarve’s wines and keep the winery tradition alive, Lagoa’s winery merges with the one in Lagos and together they create Única – Winery Cooperative of Algarve, becoming of great importance to the municipality and the region. This concrete fortress is at least candidate to ex-libris of the municipality and region that has served.
