The Convento de São José (Convent of Saint Joseph) is a sober building with a rural style from the first half of the 18th century. It was built to shelter women and children and it worked for a century directed by an order of mendicant nuns. At the entrance, there is a foundling wheel from the 18th century. After the extinction of the religious orders, the building became a girl’s college under the direction of a group of Dominican nuns until the establishment of the Republic. In the late 1980s, the autarchy recovered and adapted it to become one of the cultural places of Lagoa, since 1993. The most emblematic elements are the tower, the shutters, the chapel with the picture of Saint Joseph at the altar, the cloister with the tank in the middle or the menhir from an archeological site in the area of Porches, dating from 5000 or 4000 BC.
